Abstract We present a new interaction space for wearables by inlaying interactive elements, in the form of buttons, into outdoor clothing, specifically jackets and coats. Interactive buttons, or iButtons, allow users to perform specific tasks using inconspicuous gestures—subtle actions which are not easily perceived by others. They are intended for outdoor settings, where reaching for a mobile phone or other devices may not be very convenient or appropriate. Different types of buttons serve dedicated functions, and appropriate placement of these buttons make them easily accessible, without requiring visual contact. By adding context sensitivity, buttons can also be repurposed to fit other functions. By linking multiple buttons, it is possible to create workflows for specific tasks. We provide a description of an initial iButton design space and highlight some scenarios to illustrate the envisioned usage of interactive buttons.

Assessing Inconspicuous Smartphone Authentication for Blind People

As people store more personal data in their smartphones, the consequences of having it stolen or lost become an increasing concern. A typical counter-measure to avoid this risk is to set up a secret code that has to be entered to unlock the device after a period of inactivity. However, for blind users, PINs and passwords are inadequate, since entry 1) consumes a non-trivial amount of time, e.g....

What went wrong at the Beatson Oncology Centre ? Richard

A man tried on a suit in a clothing store. Looking at himself in the mirror, the man observed that the jacket was too long in the back. “No problem,” said the salesman. “Just bend forward a little at the waist.” The man bent forward. The back of the suit now looked fine but he now saw that the left sleeve was a little too short and the right one a little too long. “No problem,” said the salesma...

Minimal Social Weight User Interactions for Wearable Computers in Business Suits

This paper presents the e-SUIT, a wearable computer incorporated in a traditional business suit. A key feature of the system is an array of input/output devices integrated into the garment. These devices are connected to a network bus incorporated into the suit jacket. The network connects the jackets sensors and I/O with a Compaq iPAQ operating Windows CE. The iPAQ is connected to the users p...

Investigation of the Pile Aging Effect of a Fixed Offshore Platform Located in Persian Gulf using Nonlinear Soil-Pile Interactions

The study about the jacket platforms in the past has revealed that the most of the collapse failures occur due to the lack of strength of the pile foundation. However, when the jacket platforms which have been collapsed due to extreme condition were looked into, it was found that most of them had their foundations intact. These contrasting facts can be explained with the help of the phenomenon ...

Wearable Sensor Badge & Sensor Jacket for Context Awareness

The addition of sensors to wearable computers allows them to adapt their functions to more suit the activities and situation of their wearers. Here a wearable sensor badge is described constructed from (hard) electronic components, which can sense perambulatory activities for context-awareness. A wearable sensor jacket is described that uses advanced knitting techniques to form (soft) fabric st...
